How to contribute

Thank you for your interest in contributing to the OceanVoices blog!

Keeping OceanVoices up and running takes a lot more than just writing new blog posts. Our team searches for new authors and stories, interviews personalities of the marine research landscape, takes care of social media and other outreach, exchanges with our partner FYORD, revises draft posts and takes care of the final typesetting and layout on the backend of our website. On this page, you can find information how to contribute to OceanVoices, and how to earn University credits and a certificate to acknowledge your work (see below). In any case we invite you to get in touch with us with any ideas, concerns or questions.

We are happy to welcome new faces anytime!

Who can contribute to OceanVoices?

Anybody can become an author or team member of OceanVoices: students or researchers from marine science fields as much as interested people from outside of academia. Since OceanVoices is all about marine and research-related topics, a general interest in these things is certainly beneficial. You don’t need any specific skills or qualifications – simply reach out and we can discuss what role suits you best!

What are ways to contribute?

  • Author: Write blog posts
  • Editor: Revise and edit draft blog posts from other authors
  • Backend: Fit draft blogs into our website design and take care of the layout
  • Communication: Email communication with partners, authors, and the team
  • Outreach: Social media and short text contributions to several newsletters

How to become an author?

You don’t need to join the team to become an author with OceanVoices, we regularly feature guest authors. Do you already have an idea what to write about? Or maybe you don’t have an idea, but would like to write a blog? We always have a bunch of unwritten blogs that are waiting for an author to take care of them. The OceanVoices team is happy to support you with every step of the writing process, from brainstorming ideas to the final round of revisions. Simply get in touch!

What if I’m not a marine researcher?

You’re not working in or studying a marine subject, but you’re curious and passionate about the ocean and have something to share? If you like the idea of OceanVoices, you’re more than welcome regardless of your field of research. Reach out and join the team, and we will help find marine aspects of your research, or you could help support the editorial team!

How to earn credits or a certificate

Publishing a blog with us can earn you credits for the SciComm Certificate offered by Kiel University! Whether you would like to become an author, help out with our social media or make up an entirely new format, we appreciate any support, and help you gain valuable SciComm experience! If you contribute to OceanVoices, we will award your effort with an official certificate that you can add to your CV or applications to show your engagement.

Don’t hesitate to reach out with ideas, questions or feedback. We’re excited to hear from you!
