Polar Beast is deploying scientists from 12 countries to study the effects of climate change around Greenland. Living onboard the Research Vessel MARIA S. MERIAN for 5 weeks, we will survey the East Greenland coastline from Cape Farewell to Young Sound. In addition to underway sensor measurements, we will deploy instruments to sample the water column along the shelf and into 5 fjord systems in order to study how freshwater outflow from the Arctic and from local fjord systems affects marine biogeochemistry. Coring work run in parallel will provide valuable records of past environmental change around Greenland and will allow us to assess how environmental factors influence what gets preserved in the sedimentary record. All the while we will be keeping a keen lookout for icebergs and narwhals, both of which are to be avoided!
