Icebergs clogging the narrow part of Sermilik

This week we have been busy surveying the waters of Sermilik, a large glacier fjord on the east coastline and one of the few sites hereabouts that has been surveyed before. Why are we re-visiting this fjord when our other fieldsites were previously un-surveyed? Well, visiting new areas is exciting and we can perhaps find new things to think about in our data, but sustained long term monitoring of a number of sites is also important to know how climate change is affecting the region. Our transect of Sermilik might therefore not be new, but it is an important contribution to the sustained effort of science teams from around the world to understand the changing dynamics of the ocean and cryosphere.
