Ice ahoy!

After two days of a not so comfortable crossing from Iceland to Greenland (a force 7 sea state kept most of us in a state of mild discomfort), we were thrilled this morning to make it to the Greenland shelf where the weather is much more pleasant!

We’ve already filmed some seals having a leisurely sunbath out on the ice mélange and sited some huge icebergs making their way southwards in the East Greenland Current. The surface water temperature has also dropped sharply as we near the coastline. With such good weather conditions, we hope for some smooth scientific deployments over the next few days. East Greenland is notoriously hard for research ships to access and we’re extremely grateful for the support of the Greenlandic colleagues and authorities.

The crew and scientists enjoy the first ice. Many of them haven’t seen sea ice or icebergs before.
